The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) recently announced that seven inventors from the state of Georgia will be inducted into the 2022 class of NAI Fellows. The NAI Fellows Program was established to highlight academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Election to NAI Fellow status is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.
The 2022 class of NAI Fellows included 169 distinguished inventors from 110 different research universities, governmental and non-profit research institutions worldwide. The 2022 NAI Fellows from Georgia are from Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and University of Georgia and include: George R. Painter, Raymond Joseph Dingledine, Adegboyega K. Oyelere, Zhong Lin Wang, Madhavan Swaminathan, Naola Ferguson-Noel, and Gerardus Josephus Boons.
The Georgia Intellectual Property AllianceⓇ (GIPA) and National Inventors Hall of FameⓇ (NIHF) have partnered to pilot the first IPknow™ program in Georgia school districts. The IPknow program combines professional development for educators and access to student programming. This pilot initiative was designed and developed to support the mission of both organizations to educate students and educators in Georgia about the benefits of understanding the importance of incorporating concepts related to intellectual property (IP). While NIHF already has a presence in some parts of Georgia, GIPA seeks to help expand access to the NIHF innovation and IP curricula to more students.
The Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA) is pleased to announce that on August 23, 2022, Governor Kemp signed a proclamation once again declaring that October will be Intellectual Property (IP) Month in Georgia. The proclamation is a recognition of the significant role that IP plays in Georgia’s economy, encouraging investment in knowledge and innovation to move society forward and contribute to Georgia’s thriving technology and creative media industries. Governor Kemp’s declaration helps build awareness of IP across the state of Georgia and supports the ongoing efforts of GIPA and its constituents to improve access to and the functioning of the IP ecosystem for the benefit of all Georgia residents.

The Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA) stands in a unique role with its efforts to facilitate creation, protection, and enablement of intellectual property for the social well-being of our citizens. Late last year, GIPA made the decision to remove legislative advocacy from our mission so that we could better represent all citizens of Georgia under the GIPA umbrella. It is from this perspective that GIPA acknowledges the complex and difficult conversations we face as a society at the intersection of balancing equitable and widespread access to life-saving technology and the intellectual property rights that incentivize the development of that same life-saving technology.
GIPA is proud to have joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in celebration of World IP Day Throughout April. This year’s theme “Small Businesses Taking Big Ideas to Market,” is central to GIPA’s strategic focus and at the heart of the many programs targeted at increasing awareness and understanding of intellectual property throughout the state of Georgia.
GIPA’s first-ever IP Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service was instituted for promising individuals making contributions having a lasting impact on society. The first Award recipient is James H. “Jim” Johnson Jr. of Eversheds Sutherland. GIPA also proudly recognized three professionals for The IP Community Service Award. These outstanding individuals include Noah Graubart, Fish & Richardson; Matthew Howell, Alston & Bird; and Gail Podolsky, Carlton Fields.
The GIPA Entertainment, Arts & Sports (EAS) committee has organized recognized ‘movers and shakers’ for its first IP Roundtable meeting. Intellectual property leaders today launched the US IP Alliance, an organisation geared towards uniting IP groups, creators and owners in a mission to educate the general public across 50 states on the value of patents, trademarks, copyright and other forms of IP.
It is time to confront the danger and complexity that plagues IP by committing to education and awareness, says Scott Frank at AT&T and the Georgia IP Alliance.
Without IP, ideas would essentially have no economic value. IP is what turns an idea into an asset with economic value. And without economic value, key innovations and big ideas that are essential to our expansive knowledge economy would probably stall or even cease altogether.
A world without IP would result in a chilling effect on innovation. Very few people and companies would be willing to spend significant time and money to develop an idea if they couldn’t profit from it.
As we face a truly unprecedented situation with the global pandemic, the Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA) wanted to reach out and update you on how we are approaching the situation.
We believe that we are uniquely positioned to provide the leadership, resources, and advocacy needed to empower Georgia creators, protectors, and enablers to advance society. As an organization, GIPA can rally the resources needed to help move the ideas of creators into the production facilities of manufacturers in order to deliver solutions to promote the economic and social well-being of every citizen of Georgia. This is why GIPA was formed – for this time and for this purpose.
An impressive assembly of creators, protectors, and enablers of intellectual property gathered to chart a new organization whose mission is to serve as a “hub” for a statewide innovation ecosystem to benefit our state [of Illinois].
On October 17, 2019, approximately 300 people in the Georgia community came together in the Egyptian Ballroom of the Fox Theater to celebrate the amazing work that hundreds of people are doing to help the state bring intellectual property awareness, education, collaboration, and impact to its citizens.
The 15th Annual Corporate Intellectual Property Institute® (CIPI) was hosted by the Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance and returned to Georgia State University College of Law to help in-house corporate counsel, local IP leaders, seasoned academics and lawyers at the top of the profession share knowledge and collect more than a dozen CLE credits for the effort.
The Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance Board Strategic Retreat took place on November 7, 2019. It was a futuristic boost to have so many engaged leaders intent on improving the benefits from IP to their Georgia ecosystem constituents, programs, and perspectives.
The Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance held its 6th Annual Intellectual Property Think Tank in December at the offices of Smith, Gambrell and Russell, LLP. This year’s theme focused on: “Dimensioning the Intellectual Property Needs of the State of Georgia”. Over 30 intellectual property thought leaders representing Georgia’s IP Ecosystem participated in event, including Corporations, Government, Universities, Entrepreneurs, Private Law Practices and IP Service Providers.
The 10th annual CIP CUP Charity IP Golf Tournament was held on October 3, 2019 at St. Ives Country Club, with $13,404.36 in proceeds benefiting Georgia Lawyers for the Arts and the Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA).
IP Bash was launched in May 2019 and has grown into one of the signature connectivity programs of GIPA. The most recent event was held at the Atlanta Tech Village rooftop, with guest speaker and inventor advocate author Stephen Key.
What do a world-famous entertainer, the executive producer of a hit television show, and the top executive at a major film studio have in common? On November 16, 2019 they (and others) influenced students, creatives and attorneys at the Intellectual Property Masterclass hosted by the Entertainment, Sports and Media Law Initiative (ESML) and the Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII).
GIPA was kindly provided time on the agenda at the Technology Student Association (TSA) of GA’s annual event at Jekyll Island. TSA is a national student organization created to develop skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as business education. The organization has 250,000 members.
The Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance thanks Governor Brian Kemp for his recent IP Proclamation for IP Month in Georgia. October 2019 represents the second consecutive year in which October was IP Month in Georgia.
Managing Intellectual Property, one of the most respected IP publications in the world, recently named GIPA Chair Scott Frank one of the Top 50 Most Influential People in IP.
For the sixth year running, Georgia Tech recently hosted the K-12 InVenture Prize. The competition, modeled after the Georgia Tech InVenture Prize, encourages elementary, middle school, and high school students to engage with invention and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts.
The Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property (Michelson IP) is proud to announce a partnership with the Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (GIPA) designed to enhance intellectual property education and awareness across the Peach State. Georgia currently ranks tenth in the country in patents awarded by the United States Patent Office.
As part of the collaboration, Michelson IP will provide GIPA access to its extensive portfolio of open educational resources – developed to enhance IP education. The organizations will coordinate to incorporate these IP assets into the curricula of select Georgia K-12 schools and educational programs in order to advance the shared goals of fueling innovation and entrepreneurship, driving economic opportunities.

GIPA will serve as the umbrella organization for an efficient ecosystem of partners, all focused on accelerating the market launch of ideas that serve the common good.
