DEXTER CAFFEY has spent the past 20 years working with major publicly traded U.S. companies and helping institutional clients access financial platforms to hedge their portfolio risk and to reduce cost. While on a business trip to Israel in the fall of 2017, Mr. Caffey was speaking with a cybersecurity professional and noticed he could see every application on the phone of that individual. He thought to himself, "What if we could create software for documents and devices that use “continuous identification,” that will shut off for any unauthorized “iris” or “face” viewing that document or screen?" Mr. Caffey immediately connected with an Israeli biometrics technology firm to assist creating this software, and he founded Smart Eye Technology, Inc., in January 2018, to commercialize the technology.
GREGG FREISHTAT is a technology executive with over 30 years of experience leading innovative and transformative companies. He founded 5 venture-backed start-ups, with 4 successful exits and is now Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Solar Inventions. He has led several companies through acquisition in disruptive technologies related to telecom/internet, personal finance/online banking, web-based analytics, digital media/online marketing and solar energy. Freishtat is an active private equity investor, an inventor on 20 patents, and has served on many Boards including: Greensky, Telet, Proficient Systems, VerticalOne, and many others. Freishtat received an undergraduate degree from Boston University and his J.D. from the University of Maryland School Of Law.
KURT JACOBUS served as managing director for GRA Venture Fund for more than two years (2018-2021). As CEO of MedShape, an orthopedic device company he co-founded, he is a materials scientist and mechanical engineer with a track record of growing young businesses as a leader, advisor and investor. (In April 2021, MedShape was acquired by DJO, a subsidiary of Colfax Corporation / NYSE: CFX.) In addition to MedShape, Dr. Jacobus had a founding role in three other companies and has served in a formal advisory role to five other companies.
MARK ROSTICK sits on the Investment Committee and co-manages the Cloud & AI practice and portfolio at Intel Capital. He currently works with, among others, portfolio companies Cherre, Immuta, Lilt, MemVerge, MinIO, and Tetrate. His past investments include Amplidata (acquired by Western Digital), Enpirion (acquired by Altera), Velostrata (acquired by Google), and Virtustream (acquired by DellEMC). Mark earned a J.D. and an International M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina.
DANIEL SINEWAY is a registered patent attorney who takes a strategic, business-focused approach to helping protect the IP rights of his clients, which include startups, early-stage entrepreneurial companies, and mid/large companies. He manages patent and trademark portfolios of all sizes, including preparing and filing patent and trademark applications and drafting license agreements. His areas of practice include electronic commerce and payment systems, Internet-of-Things (IoT), social media technologies, healthcare technologies, nanotechnology, and “green” technologies. Daniel also represents research organizations and universities to protect and commercialize their technologies.
GREG KIRSCH (Moderator) is a Partner and the Head of the Intellectual Property Practice of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP. Greg serves as patent counsel to clients ranging from large multinational corporations to small start-ups, as well as universities. He has prepared and obtained many hundreds of patents during his career for a diverse clientele for inventions spanning a full range of technologies. Greg is also an Adjunct Professor of patent law at Emory University School of Law and an Adjunct Professor of intellectual property law at Washington University School of Law (St. Louis). Greg is a past Chair of the State Bar of Georgia’s IP Law Section.
